I'm trying to "clean up" stone chips on my car. I don't make any claim to be a body/paint guy. I cleaned out around the chips with filler and smoothed the surface with 180 - 320 - 600 - and finished with 1200 grit dry paper. I can't compound out the whirls left from sanding in the areas around the damage. I compounded with a medium grit and tried straight line and circular motions. Should I go to 1600 or did i "f" it up and just leave it alone? How many coats of brushed on touchup should I apply before compounding & waxing the damaged areas? Thanx for any info....

If you sanded the paint with 180 grit then you put some pretty deep scratches in the finish and doubt you where able to sand them out with the finer grit papers. At this point I'd say "leave it alone", if you sand any more you'll probably go through the paint and be down to the primer.
