Can ANYTHING be seen from these pictures..? Can those that know engines inside and out tell me ANYTHING about this engine. I purchased it without hearing it run, but was told it was good.. No specs or info as far as what's inside. There's numbers scribbed on some areas and "dimples" ..like a hole was started with a drill bit..?
I do know it's a 71 318 with J heads.. and appears to have double roller chain..
Thanks for ANY input..!

J heads.... compression might be crap/while you're at it take the heads off and CC them...

Mismatch numbers on the rod cap on the next to last photo? Once I see that I have a hard time trusting the rest. If you're not going to dive into it, at least run it on a test stand before you go through all the work installing it.

THat's why you do this kind of stuff instead of throwing parts in a bucket.

Good eye!

Is this what you're talking about..? Both look like 3's to me.

If the rod caps were a problem it would have spun a bearing by now.

For the drilled dimples, it looks like it was for location. Each dimple is moved to the next "position". They progressively move down the cap flat. Likely a way for the engine builder to match up x goes in x with it upside down?

Looks like a typical cast crank, cast piston 318 to me. Is that balancer beveled on the inner edge? Kinda looks that way in the photo. As mentioned, I'd check the bearing clearances before putting the pan back on....except for the rear main unless it's leaking, or, you feel like resealing that. If the other mains are correct, I'd assume the rear is too.

It's got some piston skirt wear into the cylinder bore. Time for a rebuild. It looks like it's got a few miles on it. Too bad you didn't plastigage it. Curious if it's been rebuilt before.

if you can blow you nose you can use plastigauge on bearings. Then hounknowmwhatnyiungot. babe nice to look at a few bearings and journals.

Yep I'm sure you can catch a few fingernails on them gouges
