pinion depth, how close does it have to be

Yes, this time I made a holding jig from angle steel clamped to my workbench. Total game changer vs trying to do it on the floor.

I did the same. Vice mounted. You can loosen the set screw to turn it as well.

What did you do exactly to get the side load (I'm assuming that's what you mean by resistance) against the ring gear to get a good read on the pattern?
I too used a side bar. This was my second attempt. What I learned but forgot already is that you adjust a certain side last or you may lose your pattern like I did the 1st try. I will post if I can find it.

Isnt there an order of operations like pinion depth, side clearance then check backlash and ajust? Its been years but i remmeber an order and there was some tool that was bolted in place for the ring gear and carrier and you use feeler guages to select a pinion gear shim keep in mind Im talking Ford 8.8 here not the Mopar chunk but point is there is an order of assembly where if you follow it it goes together quite well. Only bad thing is you need the tools and jigs etc.:)

Ratech has a pinion depth fixture for about 35 bucks I do believe.
The Mopar install kit (if you can get one cheap enough) gets a bit involved and ya' need the FSM to use it (and also to remember how to use it, lol) effectively......

You can buy a cheap Rock auto pinion bearing and hone it, so it slips on and off easily to shim the pinion. Then Install your correct bearing and seal during final assembly.

I copied the dealership tool, and made the carrier bearing sizes in chev, Ford, Dana, so it works on all diffs, including Toyota.

The small square flat piece is exactly 0.500" (1/2") to transfer the end of the pinion gear over to the center of the case, - then measure depth from where the machined "flat" center of the cross shaft to the pinion gear.
( Hope that make sense)

I like that. I'll have to make one. I take it the axle shafts are 1" diameter. Too bad I just threw out carrier races for 8.75 and Toyota. :BangHead:

That sounds like it helps if you don't have the tool.
