I currently have a 74 dart thats going to be a street strip deal (this uses spool mounts on the k member)

8.50 cage (nothing ties into the engine bay)
4 link
sub frame connectors
torque boxes
welded k member
512" nitrous big block
727 w/ brake

at what point should i be considering a mid plate/ motor plate? if i use poly motor and trans mounts with a torque strap and something to control the motor moving forward and backwards is that suitable? they dont offer solid mounts for these cars.

or at a certain level is the motor plates necessary? i don't know the limits of the spool mounts on these cars. id like to know what guys doing 1.10-1.30 60fts are using

thanks

What spool mounts does it currently have?
Factory spool mounts with polyurethane inserts on a modified k-frame will hold up. Conversion spool mounds like the Schumacher mounts with polyurethane should hold up.

If you use either spool mount and a proper 74 transmission mount with polyurethane inserts you won't need anything to control forward/rearward movement. That is needed with a motor plate setup though.

it will be the factory spool mounts with poly, ill do the trans mount as well. i wanted to give this a shot instead of doing a motor plate set up. just seemed these things are a pain to work on with a big block in them and the motor plates might make it worse.

thanks

In your case, I'd probably make some solid aluminum inserts for the spool mounts, and use a rubber trans mount (to avoid cracking tyranny case.)
My 1.36 60 ft car used a steel Hurst front mount, a steel mid plate and a rubber trans mount.
My used-to-be 8 sec car uses a front plate tied to front down bars, and a mid plate. Solid trans mount, it's not going anywhere.
You could ask @71Demon540 what he uses. He's got a 1.17 60ft 540 Demon.

I've seen poly mounts that had lock-out pins converting them to solid (kinda) for the track. The car I saw them on had them for quite a while, so they must have worked for his app. Can't tell you is they were custom or retail. Anyway sounds like a decent compromise..

I ended up ordering a front plate and a mid plate we are going to install. i want room to grow with the car so this seemed like the best way to go. Thanks for the help guys i appreciate it.

Please post some pictures when get to that point. I would like to see how it goes. That car is going to look good with a low stance. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely i will get some pictures posted once we get it started, thanks i appreciate it man

I got the front plate in along with the radiator, got all of the taillights installed (finding those were a nightmare) im taking it back to my friend next week to do
-down bars for front plate
-anti roll bar
-exhaust
-ss coolant hoses
will post pics when those are done. Just been buying parts and waiting for an opening. Then we start wiring and fuel lines

we actually only did the front plate and left the midplate out. when i was mocking everything up it looked to be a nightmare and would have to do a lot of cutting and would need to basically push the headers/exhaust out of the front fenders. Front plate tied into the cage and poly spool mounts will work for now and we will revisit if the car gets faster. looks like alot of guys run a front plate and trans mount only lol so i feel ok about it
