i want to learn to port lol. i have a set of 75 318 heads that have been out in the rain. i dont think anyone would want them so i am gonna practice on them lol. i know take out not to much metal and in the right places but where and how much lol. i really want to make them look nice and perform better but if i mess them up thats fine. so if you wanna give me the run down lol

Theres more to porting than just grinding iron, it really depends on what the engine is intended for. As different engines require different modifications. And doing a full port and polish job may not be what the engine needs to make it run the best that it can. Fully ported heads are for all out racing. Most heads that are intended for the street/strip or street only need to have the bowls cleaned up and a gasket match and a good valve job. This way the velocity will stay as high as possiable and give the best HP and Tq curve that the engine can get. So I guess first you need to say what your intentions are for the heads, then we can help you more.

I don't think he plans to do anything with them but practice.

Here is my suggestion:
buy or get a set of intake and exhaust gaskets, and either a marker or machinist dye. Put the gaskets into place, held in lightly with some bolts, and mark the areas of the head that do not match the gaskets. Start here, opening up the intake and exhaust ports to match the gaskets. You have to taper your work into the ports, merely opening up the first inch of the port is not going make any significant difference.
After that, pull the valves, and smooth the transition between the cast portion of the head, and the valve seats. Blend and shape the valve guide boss (bump in roof that the valve passes through).

Imagine it from the air flow side, the air wants to pass from the intakes to the head with little to not disturbance, alont the intake runner, make the turn and pass the valve. As such, the intake to head junction is important, the turn to valves (bowl blend and valve seat)is important.

I bought the MP porting templates and used them for my first porting job. If you can get a set it would really help. I don't know if they have them for 318 heads though. You figure out pretty quickly using the templates want they want you to do and where to grind.

I still cannot find a porting template. Where do you guys find them and do you have a part number?

Good luck buddy, all i know is, its like an artform!
Its not something you just pick up an can do!

Best of luck!

This is the only p/n I could find on a simple search - Mopar Performance
P4876412 template kit. I can't say whether it is for all SB heads or even still available. I would check the MP catalog or with Mancini.

y ai just wanna see if its something i could get good at lol. like i said these heads would probably get pitched if i dont do this. lol i will find some gaskets and start lol

I think the MP templates were for 2.02 and 1.6 valves if I am not mistaken. I know nobody wants to be giving away their trade secrets, especially with the R&D that goes into porting and flow, but it would be nice if someone could start making porting templates from a good flowing set of 318 heads. That way those who want to try their hand at home porting would reduce the risks of overdoing it. I really think that there would be a market for the templates for those who can't afford to get a full port job.

I also woder if you could get an experienced porter to do the intake and exhast on just one cylinder from which you could work off of and perhaps make your own set of templates to do the rest? But my guess is nobody would be willing to do just one so that you could "borrow" their design.

What 67 Dart said. That is the best advice I could give. Have someone with experience do one Int. and Exh. bowl and gasket match then you will see what is needed.

wats different then templates and just gaskets? lol like i said they might never get on a engine so they dont need to be perfect or as much metal as possible. i just want some practice
