Just lately my 73 Dart loses rpm and runs rough at idle when I apply the brakes. Take my foot off and it recovers. May I assume the diaphragm has a leak? I wanted to run this by those in the know before I spend the coin on a new unit, in case I'm missing something. The booster in the car is 1973 original.

Either the diaphragm or the control valve (the little round plastic dingus at the booster end of the hose running to the intake manifold). Probably the booster. Do not make the error of buying a "remanufactured" booster through ordinary parts stores, online or in person; that way lies endless spending and endless do-overs. Get with BBX to have a fixed-properly-and-stays-that-way go of it.

Sounds like great advice Dan.

Would a proper way of testing be to apply vacuum with a vacuum pump to the nipple on the control valve? Mine doesn't hold a vacuum when testing this way.

Before assuming the booster is the issue how about some trouble shooting.

Remove the vacume hose from the booster or the manifold and cap it off.

Then reperform your assumptions by applying the brake at idle.

If the problem is now gone then the booster is the likely problem.

That's a great idea and I already did that. Yes, the symptom disappeared when a did that. I'm just making sure I'm not overlooking something else. Thanks.

It was about $240-250 IIRC. i can’t get to my receipts as I am at Dulles waiting on my flight to Paris
