Power steering pump pulle question

Hey Guys,

I have a question about the proper installation of a pulley on a power steering pump.

I am able to move my pulley in and out of the pump about 3/8 of an inch. I believe this to be the source of my 'slapping' noise while driving the car. I have tried removing the pump and pushing the pulley on further with the tool, but it is bottomed out (all the way down) Should I have any play left when the pulley is installed properly.

The engine is a 71 340.

...........no there shouldnt be any play in and out....if so ur pump is worn....kim.....
