When checking play in your steering, does the car need to be running for power steering ? I know it sounds dumb but I've always had Manual steering. Seems like I have excessive play in the box but haven't yet had the time to investigate. Yes I know I can check the Service manual.

Yes, the car needs to be running to check play. There is an adjustment nut on the top of the box but it could cause steering bind if you over tighten it.

Yes, I have adjusted boxes before. My dad, an old school mechanic would have me move the wheel back and forth until I felt a bump in the wheel and then back off a smidge . I know that's not how the manual has you do it but that's how he did.
Thanks, I thought maybe it had to be checked running.

The correct procedure is to back off the lash and check the preload on the sector bearings first. This is the large lock ring on the input side. Then you can go to setting the lash.

the way that box works, there HAS to be play in it with the engine NOT running.
That first couple of inches, activates the assist mechanism . If you adjust it out, you will have immediate boost all the time and the car will be all over the road as you constantly make corrections.
If you tighten the sector shaft too much, it will stick on center. Then you will move the steering wheel, but the resistance of the sticking will call for boost, and Pow! you will get it, and again be chasing the car all over the road.
The proper way to not get excessive boost is to increase the resistance of the reaction springs inside the box. You add more of them to dull it. This simultaneously gets rid of some of the play.

To see how the box works; open the hood, with the engine off, and rotate the steering coupler. Watch the coupler. It will move out of the box, on either side of center. That is how it works and it is normal. When the car is driving, that action calls for the boost. When the engine is running but the car is stopped, that action is what gives you extra boost for parallel parking, and similar slow-speed maneuvers..

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I better read a manual. I did adjust it and it's better but still too dam floaty on the hyway.
