Thought my power steering pump had gave up the ghost so pulled it off. Removed the reservoir (federal pump), and found this little gem in the inlet hole that feeds the pump rotor. Now how in the hell does a stone get into the pump reservoir? This unit has only been on the car about 8 years now. It's a reman unit from carquest. Put it all back together and, eureka! she's good as new. Glad I decided to have a look see before ordering a new pump.

Maybe instead of doing the "Pump it down" mods some one went for "Plug it up". :D

That's pretty dang odd, but I would guess someone layed the pump on the ground before they installed it and ended up picking the rock up in it.

So a power steering pump cannot pass a stone? :D

I wonder if that is actually media used in a part tumbler (used for cleaning or deburring during manufacturing)? It almost looks too rounded and perfectly shaped to be some random stone.

it does look like vibra-tumbler media. Probably lodged somewhere until recently.
