Well today it was time to pull the 4.88 rear end from my old car now donor car and it copped an additude, First a lug stripped and wouldnt come off and had to tighten it till it snapped. All this is going on in the driveway in the sun in Houston in 97 degree heat without the index added in. Next I go to remove the shackle boxes, the 4 little 9/16 nuts connecting it to the body. One side smooth and the second side 3 are a piece of cake but the stud on the bottom inside decides its been stationary for 41 years and today its gonna spin. Check my torch and my acetylene is empty. try metal sawzall blade and after 3 give up. Now i,m sitting in front of the computer drinking beer getting my nerve up for round two. Now I really understand why everyone loves hot rods but not many have one. Wish me luck.

take the break to decide the next attack strategy. vise grips on the end of that stud? die grinder and just slowly grind the head away?

sPRING IN THE WAY Just made a major sawzall attack .I cut everything but the spring .It wasnt pretty lol. Its out and ready for refurbishing now . Im starting the attack on the stainless exhaust and crossover now. Saving as much of the ol girl as i can.

gonna burn the midnight oil .got plenty beer and its cooling down a little .I wish my Harley in the corner would keep quiet .It keeps calling my name. iT DOESNT CARE ABOUT MY MOPAR .i THINK ITS JEALOUS.

I'm the same way I have a custom soft tail. The wind feels cooler when you hit 60 on the bike then when it's comming in throuht the vents of my 66 barracuda. but old cars are cool as he-- ! i'll never give up ether one !!

Yep I have 2 HDs as well. I very nasty sporty 1200 that says 883 on the tank, has Buell S1 lightning heads, andrews cams etc. and a 1550 big bore kit on the road king classic.

OH and a fridge of beer.

See the way I see it Mopars are torque monsters as are harleys. That is why they go toghter..

PS did you see the PRO stock harleys win on the drags this weekend on the NHRA on ESPN?

Yep more beer then Can you gring the darn bolt off with a die grinder? Watch your eyes too..

good luck!

I will drink with ya!

Hmmmm.....

Could that have something to do with a 160 ci displacement limit on the Harleys vs. a 101 ci displacement limit for the Suzuki's? That would be like saying my 360 is so competitive that the Chevys are allowed 493 ci? Come on man! Harleys are allowed 4 valve heads and and the Asian bikes have to run two valve heads? Harley's are allowed to run purpose built S&S engine but the Asian bikes are stuck with factory crankcases? Harley's can fuel injection but the Asian bikes have to run carbs?

I love all bikes, having been a motorcycle mechanic from '84 to '95. I've worked on Harleys, BSAs, Triumphs, Nortons, Indians, Ducatis, MotoGuzzis, the asian three, Bmws and some custom Italian exotics you most likely have never heard of.

All bikes have their strengths and weaknesses. Some do some things better than others. I remember that back in the 80's when AMF owned Harley, the techs used to call them "Hardley Doesanythings". Now this was back when Harley dominated flat track, but then again, the AMA, the keep things competitive, imposed a 500cc limit on the Asian bikes PLUS a restrictor plate.

Oh well, anything to keep Willie G. rollin' in dough, and the doctors and lawyers supplied with rolling art that they can tow to Sturgis and play dress up, I guess.

Now I know this sounds a bit a like a slam, but it's not. It's just the reality of the situation. I have no doubt that your bike does 10's, but could it drive across the country, carve the canyons, carry your luggage, idle like a kitty in 30 degree weather, sit in traffic in Chicago or Denver for an hour then drive to the strip and pull a 10? Some of the the Asian and Italian bikes can. The Suzuki Haybusa, Kawasaki zx1400 and Ducati Testastretta S4R S come to mind. How American are Harley's anyway? I know the Brakes (Nissin) and electrics are Japanese. Harleys been using Japanese electric starters (Matsushita) since the early 70's and maybe earlier.

Another fact you may not be aware of. The big Kawasaki's starting with the KZ1000 frames in 1976 are made in Nebraska! Honda Goldwings have been made in the states since the 70's too.

Like I said I like all bikes and have owned over 25 bikes in the last 28 years, including a '69 sporty (Boy, you just gotta love that twist-grip ignition advance! LOL!). I would definitely own a EVO engined harley some day, as their quality has jumped by leaps and bounds, but not at these prices. I'm sure a basket case will come my way. My next bike will most likely be a Ducati Monster or Sport Classic as I will get far more for my money and not succumb to some strange propensity for people to become a rolling billboard for some corporate entity. What's up with that? I've never bought a factory accesory, much less clothes from a motorcycle factory.

Then, of course, you have the Asian sport bike riders wearing wife beaters and neon colored flip-flops, splitting lanes and doing wheelies in traffic, giving everyone a bad taste for Jap bikes.

Anyway, don't knock what other people ride, unless you've had the chance to ride one yourself, you just might be suprised.

Hey I hear ya man! I do not think I knock any of the other bikes, I too have had 15 diff biles over they years. All I said was that the HD's are very torquey and that they wont pro stock. Not top fuel.

PS my bike does run low 10s, idles at about 1000 quite rumpy but still get 60mpg when my hand is out of it. OH and it corners very well, yes not as good as some rice rockets, but way better than a stocker!

Your points are well taken. Thanks for the input. I was just saying that the comparison of the long stroke is simalar to a mopar. A chevy SB is like that of a higher rpm bike.

thanks man!

And you just gotta love the fact that theyre HEMIS

10-4

FYI only he EVO sporty / Buell is a 4 valve my twim cam @ 1340 are 2 valve ..

PS I really loved my 79 kawi 1000 2 stroker when I was young too. But I like that I can not have to rev hard and still make awesome low end twist.
