Hi Folks

Looking to ID a purple shaft cam. From what I understand, they are color coded. This one has some green paint near the oil pump drive. Does anyone have any insights? Thanks.

I have no way to measure it. It is in a brand new engine, and the owner can't remember.

Set up a harbor freight dial indicator setup in the valley so you directly measure lobe lift. Do you know if it’s a solid or hydraulic cam?

I've never heard of color coding.....except for purple. lol As mentioned, get a lift figure and we should be able to make an educated guess.

It's hydraulic. Trying to figure out if I want to buy this fresh 360. I'm looking for mild one and don't want to tear into it.

Paint spots, don't know of that being a accurate way to identify purple shafts but maybe. I would measure the lift and that will greatly reduced the possibilities. if you use that combined with what type of camshaft hyd/solid and should be able to determine the camshaft fairly easily.

measure an open valve rocker to a closed valve rocker with a straight edge and extrapolate the lift.

Similar to educated guess the high the low based on semi accurate data though some figures are assumed to explore and obtain a realm of conclusion

FWIW, those that have the cam in hand before installation. The camshaft numbers are stamped on the back of the cam. Sometimes the numbers will be stamped a digit off by one. That would indicate it was part of a kit, cam and lifter. But that’s tearing into the engine…. I know….
