Would that show up on the pressure gauge? Cley
Best to cut the oil filter open, it is real easy to do. The oil filter is the main restriction in the whole oiling system. You may have some pressure showing on the gauge, but you need full volume flow to keep the lifters pumped up. Think of it as a garden hose barely turned on with your finger over the end, it will build pressure but will die off early because there is no volume behind it.
Thanks! Ill look there too! Cley
Spin on a new filter, preferably like the carquest brand for mopars with the Red Silicone anti-drain back valve in them. Not the black rubber drain back valve filters. Of course put a 1/2 quart of oil in the filter before screwing it on. Dirty plugged filter:
I'll do that before anything else. Will report back when I can Cley
If the previous owner put something like "Rhodes" lifters in that engine, they are well-known to make a ton of noise, even when adjusted correctly. Just throwing an idea out there.
Well I changed the oil and filter and fired it up. Quiet except for that 1 Tick-Tick-Tick on the driver's side. I pulled the rockers off and went through all the oil holes to see if anything was plugged. Sure as shit I could not get the wire through one hole bringing oil from the shaft to the rocker tip. Finally got it worked through and a big piece of crap came out of that hole. Man I hope that's it. It got late and out of respect for my neighbors I decided to wait till morning to test it. Man I hope that has it! Cley
Man that's great news I really hope it's that simple of a fix!
That is just another good reason to cut open the oil filter you just took off and see what is in it for crud and fine debris.
There was lots of fine shit in there. Probably from breaking in lifters and I saw what looked like bearing material but I think it's from the bushings on my roller rockers. They were really tight at first. Cley
You can imagine what is caught in that paper filter blocking it. Can take a magnet to the debris and the paper filter and see how much of it is steel.
Lots of steel picked up by the magnet. Still ticking but much quieter. Never let it fully warm up though. Cley
I pulled out my cam instructions from lunati today and it says to run .02-.06 of preload with their micro trol lifters it says to little will cause valve train noise. Something to look into to. Especially since you are running adjustable rockers thats an easy fix. Hopefully it was just dirty tho.
How did it look between the cartridge folds?
Black with lots of filings. Cley
