Most of these cars have gone years without lube with no side effects. .

If you don't lube it, it can limit how much mechanical advance the distributor puts out when it's too dry and hangs up.....

The lube cap on the outside of the distributer does not lube the mechanical advance. That point of lube is inside the distributer under the rotor, under the felt. That also should be lubed occasionally w/ engine oil. The luber on the outside is for the upper bushing.
