Quick priming question

-
Yes thanks guys. Just did a partial rebuild including new cam and lifers. I want to prime it before firing up. so clockwise it is. For some reason i thought counter clockwise, but thats for big blocks!

How exactly do you prime it? Is there an easy way to make a rod that fits into the oil pump?

My bad was thinking wrong here is the way you have got to do it

If you can, fill the oil filter and install, remove all the spark plugs and remove the coil wire and ground it (or disconnect the coil pack if the engine has distributor-less ignition). Also, if the vehicle is fuel injected, remove the fuel pump relay to prevent flooding. Crank the engine for 30 seconds, then wait 5 minutes for the starter to cool off. Repeat this procedure until the oil light goes out or the gauge rises (whichever you have). If you didn't prime the pump, this will take a while. Don't be impatient waiting for the starter to cool between cranking sessions, or you'll be replacing the starter also! Once you have oil pressure, install the spark plugs, enable the fuel and ignition systems and start it up! Good Luck to you!!

Where does the flathead end go? If you mean the dizzy drive gear, what about if the cam is in the engine?

:banghead:screw driver will not work :pale:#-o:wave: sorry my bad do like I said in #7 post

Hmm, so you can't prime the oil pump with the cam in the block? I thought I heard somebody say you could make a driveshaft that would go directly from the drill into the oil pump that you could turn without having to rotate the cam (and the rest of the engine) in the process. I guess it's fine if that's not the case though, I'll just make sure to prime the oil pump a bit once it's bolted in.

That would be the correct way, I thought you had the motor together and forgot to prime your pump or it has been setting a long time dry.
Wow :-D I feel better know thank you.

Mopekid Ma Mopar sells a hex shaft to do it with. Sounds like Timdart just needs to prime the oil pump with the dist. out. Since he said he put in a new cam and lifters you don't want to crank it over if at all possible cause that'll wipe the lube off and probably cause the cam to go flat. Priming with a shaft is the proper way.

Sorry, been away! I am finally priming the motor today. I'll be using an old oil pump drive shaft with the cam gear removed. I slot that into a home made extension and use an elctric drill to prime up. I'll be rotating the motor as well periodically to allow the oil to circulate.
My main concern was about which way i spin the drill . Clockwise or counter clockwise.

My other concern is that the motor is unlikely to fire on start up given that it has been unused for a while and gas will need to pump up to the carb. That said, the cam is heavily lubed and i've added GMEOS fluid as well.
Here's hoping!!

dont do as post 7 sorry memike. mancini and mp sell a hex shaft or make one out of an old distributor drive gear and spin it in the oil pump till oil shows up top then rotate motor by hand 90 degrees and do it again and another 90 and again. this feeds evrything before it is turned to flush any trash out of the bearings before theyre spun to reduce a chance of scuffing.
