Quick truck question: Power to manual steering on D150, adaptor ??

-
That shaft is cheap enough, never changed a truck from power to manual, is the end of the box splined like a car?

yes, splined like a car. I would assume the shaft is larger than a car.

Measure the diameter of the splines, I have a manual box out of a car I can measure.

Don't have a mic here, but it looks like shaft is 5/8 OD.

the shaft in the link I posted. I bet that's the beast I need.

Power box is approximately 5" longer

.730 on the spline diameter on the car box, so slightly under 3/4"

I bet that shaft is made for the guys that put body lifts on their trucks.
that's what most of the reviews say, some were because the factory coupler box was worn. Good reviews too. Means my manual box is about 5 inches shorter than the power box, that would be kind of the same. I'll see the best quality they have out there, after all, it's just my steering :D Borgeson seems to be the more pricer (187 bucks), so better quality is assumed?? Only extends 14" to 21" though. I'll have to measure. Reviews aren't quite as good as the 48 dollar one.. LOL

I changed my 1983 D150 from manual steering to power steering.
the steering shaft is a two piece unit with a coupler in the engine compartment.
The length of the lower half of the steering shaft is different between the manual and power steering set ups to match up with the length of the box.

I got the lower steering shaft section with the power box from the pull apart.
The shaft that you found on e bay looks like it would work.

If needed I could get you photos and the length of the lower shaft on my '83.
Do you still have the manual steering lower shaft?

From the rag joint to the end of the coupler (closest to the box) mine measures about 18". So, looks like the shaft in the link I posted would work just fine. Thanks guys

the shaft you posted looks like it would have a 3/4 x36 spline shaft. Are you planning on using a manual box with a 3/4 shaft?
i guess what i'm getting at, is this would be a nice piece for anyone that needs to extend a shaft, and going auto to manual, since the car manual box has the 3/4x36 (with cutting/welding)

you lose me a bit where you measure your shaft at 5/8? or you just did that b/c thats the auto box you're tossing, and installing a manual with a 3/4 x 36?

Shaft diameter of the manual steering box is about 5/8, as shown in the picture. Maybe some would call it 3/4

Called out pretty clearly here.

as @sireland67 points out, the car manual shaft mics at .730....i hope your tape measure end is loose, b/c 5/8 is not 3/4. i see your picture...but you better measure with some cheap calipers if you want to save yourself a return.

It's been ordered already. My calipers were at work. Actually, look again at the picture, it's more than 5/8 - and I'm not sure I'm on the largest part of the OD. Maybe it's 3/4. I'll know more when I get the shaft.

Im thinking of getting one coming. Would be very interested to see if It works for you. Following!

I'll keep you posted. As soon as it comes in I'll try it on the manual steering shaft.
I cant stomach the companies that charge $200 for a "steering adapter" so yeah...Anything that avoids that nonsense.

There is a $20 hard adapter that is just a spline to round, but a u joint with extra DD shaft for $45 is a steal. .

I've pounded the column shaft down to length on A-body before, worked great. Don't think that's an option on the truck as it's about 5 inches short. LOL

I also did that on my dart. On my 75 B body column tho, it's an odd duck. And it has a rag joint instead of a round shaft. I think it's gonna need something welded on.

I cut up my old steering coupler and welded a chevy one in its place. Havent had a problem with it wearing out since. On my power wagon,35” tires and a snow plow.

I would consider a solid shaft fitted to original and welded together.
I would get my ticketed welder to do it and then stress test it.

ok, it was here when I got home tonight, it looks nice. I put the splined end on my manual steering box and it fit nice. Glad I bought it. It extends from 17.5 to 26". Obviously I didn't install it on the truck, but looks to be exactly what I needed.
