Just got off the phone with Hagerty and am pretty impressed. Adding the car and trailer to a existing collector car policy is only going to cost $148 a year for comp and collision. According to the rep. I talked to the only time the car is not covered is from the green light to the finish line. I asked specificaly, is the car covered in the staging lanes. He said yes, staging lanes to starting line UNTIL the green light and from the finish line on. They need some pic's and a serial number for the car before they can send me a copy of the policy. I can not find a serial number on the chassis, so I'm going to stamp one my self. I'll let you know exactly how the coverage is stated once I get a copy.

I have also talked with Hagerty about insurance at the track, they told me the same thing. From green light to stripe you are not covered, anywhere else at the track you are covered.

I had done a lot of searching on different forums. The impression I got was that the companies that did offer coverage would not cover the car once it was running unless you paid for on track coverage.
Just last weekend I saw a car with it's door open in the staging lanes get hit by a dragster rear tire. Luckily the guy in the dragster was paying attention and stopped realizing he had hit something even though he could not see it.

I think I may look into this... So if I red light everytime I am ok? LOL... I would like to get some on the cars though..
This hit my funny bone hard. LOLOL
It seems like it is not only becomeing more available , but very affordable.
I recall " key on " race car insurance being pretty pricey , but this is something I will look into.
I had Hagerty when it was still a street car and it was really cheap I thought.
On track is still available , but still not cheap.
But Hagerty had issues with roll cages , tubs etc. that they seem to have gotten over.

Does the insurance cover liability as well as comp. and collision. How did you come up with a value for your car. Very interested, I had Hagerty on my street car.

Thanks

Where is it that you get race insurance? I looked a while back and could not find anyone that would cover the car in motion on the actual strip from green to stripe.

I sent Hagerty the pic's they requested and stamped a serial # on the chassis Saturday. When I called them with the serial number I asked them to send me a copy of the policy so I could go over it. The lady told me that the policy would be the same as for my collector car but she would send me a copy. I looked at it today and the racing exclusion basicaly says while being prepared for or participating in racing activity. With no real explanation. I called the guy I talked to last and asked for clarification and was put on hold for 5 minutes. He came back and said they won't cover race related accidents, like a fire while refueling or something that happens testing the car. He said they will cover the car any other time. Leaves some gray area that I don't like but I havn't seen where anyone else offers any more so I'm going to take a chance. Hopefully I'll never need it

When I insured my car thru them I told them about the cage etc. and they had no issue with it. Only problem I had with them was when I lived in AZ and told them I would be putting 7k miles a year on the car....

No better feeling than wasting 3 hours because you were lied to!
Hagerty sent a Custom & Modified vehicle work sheet for me to fill out. I did and faxed it on over. Next day I get a email with a copy of the proposed policy, i't includes a big fat competetion exclusion. The only time they are going to cover the car is STP (storage, transportation and paddock).
Now I'm back to looking for insurance, any suggestions?

Sounds like the first person was wrong with what he told you. He/She should have never told you what he did in your first post unless it was true. I would at least talk to that same person again and verify that they were wrong. Then ask them why they lied to you. Or were they just new and/or confused??

Sorry for the second post but.......

I believe that the Original agent probably wanted to close the deal but the Underwriters changed it to actually be realistic. I mean c'mon They know you're racing the car. I wouldn't cover it at all if I were Hagerty.

Anytime you buy insurance, and there is something in the policy, you are not sure about, or you get an answer verbaly, ask for the answer in writing.
I had a 69 Polara "cruiser" insured with Hagerty. My wife had to use an electric wheelchair. The policy excluded towing a trailer. We had a small Harbor Frieght trailer to carry the wheelchair, rather then have a lift on the back of the car. I explained this to Hagerty, and stated it was actually safer to use the trailer, then have 300+lbs hanging on the back of the car. They called me back and said OK, we could use the trailer for the wheelchair. I asked if they would send me something in writing, and they did, as a rider to the policy.

"RACE CAR INSURANCE.
OK guys and gals this needs to be a sticky so nobody can say they didn't know you can buy insurance for your race car. I'm going to lay everything out on the table to try and help everyone understand how this works.

1) Bisa insurance and I are the same company when it comes to insuring race cars. Bill Flake, Mike Flake and I are in business to write race car insurance for racers and Bill and I felt it made great business sense to bring me into the picture being that I'm a heads up racer and well known in our world of drag racing plus I write insurance for a living which is a win win when it comes to selling the policies and understanding the policy inside and out.

2) I consider myself extremley easy to get in touch with from my office phone 614-861-3100 to my cell 614-989-4168 or email [email protected] and of course by PM but that fills up real quick.

3) If you have our insurance your car is covered while racing down the race track, in the pits, while being transported to and from the race track and while being stored against COLLISION, FIRE, THEFT AND PLAIN STUPIDITY. Our policy comes with a 2500 deductible and we cover up to 100K in value. 1 cylinder head costs more than a 100K policy so price should not be the deciding factor. If your willing to have 25 to 100K in your car can you afford not to have it insured? I know there is no in hell I could rebuild mine it I totaled it.

4) We also cover the vehicle in the other lane for 50K in the event you hit it or if you cause damage to another vehicle at the races.

5) We want nothing to do with vehicles on the street..

6) We can cover your trailer and everything inside it from tools to spare parts.

7) We'll pay money for winner and r/u @ NHRA, NMCA, ORSCA, ADRL , NMRA, True Street Racing, Norwalk, Milan, ORTC if you win on Sunday the check is in the mail on Monday. Just email me with what race you won or runner up at and the check is in the mail.

This is a 12 month policy but if you don't race for 5 months a year like I do then you can remove the on track insurance but still have the storage and transportation insurance during the off months.

9) We take all forms of payments from CASH, CHECK, CC and monthly payments with a down payment for anything over 1500 in premium.

10) We can write the insurance at the track and bind it but we would preferre to write it during the week to where we can get all the information at one time.

I hope I have covered everything and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. Lets not have another person on here have a car wrecked, stolen or fire damage without this insurance on their vehicle.

megajoltman, thanks. I will give them a call. I'm not actually looking for on track insurance, Im assuming it will be to expensive. I would like something that will cover the car any place but on the track. It may not exist, but I won't know if I don't look.
Putting a value on my car was pretty easy for me because I just bought it. Purchase price plus 5K. I couldn't build this car for that but I would never build a car from scratch.

megajoltman's link is one.
I did a quick search using " race car insurance " and got a bunch of companies who provide coverage.
How good they are and how expensive they are will be more critical once I get my car done.
I'll be driving it on the street some too , so I will have to do some homework for that also.
Street coverage isn't as hard to find , and considering the investment I have in this thing , I won't be leaving home without it.
