Had my 65 rebuilt ..ever since then it runs a little hot here in fla in the summer at red lights and stopped traffic ( I,ve been told it.s a timing issue , as evrything else checks out. Anyway I really want to put a good cooling radiator in . The original is still in the car..so should I (A) have it rebuilt with more channels per square inch ..or (B) purchase an aluminum radiator , provided I can find one that fits correctly ? The aluminum radiators I.ve seen on line dont seem to be the correct size (too tall, or if they do fit they dont have the built in transmission cooler in the bottom) Any good suggestions from people who have had this problem ?:pale::pale:

I would start with having it took apart by rad shop and see if it can be rodded out. six or v8? I have a good rad for 6 cylinder you can have for shipping. for auto. In my experience mopars dont run hot unless rad is defective. You could have timing retarded causing heat build up but usually that is when running hard down the road.

You could also step up to an aluminum rad for some extra cooling, check with challenger Gary he sells the Champion line of rads. I'm sure someone on here has tried an Aluminum rad that fits correctly.

I put a 3 core aluminum Champion in my 65. The fit is good but I'm still having some overheat problems in this Florida weather. But I believe my problem is fan related and not the radiator. I ordered mine from ChallengerGary.

Fact, copper rads cool better then aluminum. No one wants to spend the money for copper. Too me, not stepping up!

I bought a cheapo AL retro for a 66 Mustang, fits great with 2 bolt holes drilled in its bracket to fit Mopar. Try any shroud first, even a Pep Boys chrome bolt in 4" strip that zip ties to your radiator will help. If its a timing issue, just fix it..?

The only early a bodys that had a shroud were AC cars, as far as
I know. were not really needed.

There was a Heavy Duty cooling package in 65 (without buying A/C)... I'm out at DD with my lap top so I don't have my code books with me, But I could look it up if you wish...

Attaching pic of my 65 cuda... An Arizona desert car that has the factory HD Cooling package with original radiator and does NOT over heat...

Cliff,

Is that fan shroud steel and an OEM part for a 65' ?

I'm not Cliff but can answer the question - that's an original OEM 65/66 fan shroud and yes they are steel. I have 3 of them for a V8 (22 inch radiator) and 1 for a slant.

I was looking through my 65 Dodge Dealer showroom album and the trailer tow option required the Heavy Duty cooling package which include the fan shroud as part of the option.
The AC package came with the shroud as has been noted.

I have a stock 1966 273 radiator, it's a 2 core and I had it rebuilt with a high efficiency 2 core and it works awesome, never runs hot and looks way better than a cheezy aluminum one :glasses7:

BTW, it was expensive but again, it works. I run a stock 4 blade fixed fan on my built 340, no shroud...runs fine even in traffic on humid 98 degree Minnesota days!

I changed my original 2 row to a three row high effieciency Only drove 125 miles so far on new Resto mod but no heating issues that I can for see. No cheezy aluminum for me:color: BTW about 400 bucks

65 Dartman pretty much answered... But, I will point out it's a two piece "Steel" OEM Shroud, Upper & Lower... (that bolt together) with 4 Shroud to Core "Brackets"...

I could give you the Slant 6 or V8 Shroud part numbers if you need them... but I think Dartman can take care of you without them!!!
