There was a thread that covered this a while back. 9" drums did not use pins in the wheel cylinder. I'll see if I can find it. I don't have personal experience with 9".

Found the thread. The OP posted a picture of how the shoe nub fits against the wheel cylinder. Post 15 and 22 are good.
