Changing the gear oil in the rear end. I have a Fel-pro gasket. Can I get away with just the gasket or do you guys put sealant too? What do you guys think?

What does the factory survice manual say?

I have always use a sealer.

On my 4x4 dakota i did front and rear axles with gasket sealer...orange only. 10k no leaks.

Gaskets almost always end up seeping and collecting dust on the parts.
I also use red RTV only. (used to be called orange but they changed it to red)
Clean both surfaces and put a 1/8 or so bead all the way around the diff staying inside the bolt holes and slap the cover on immediately and bolt her down.
It can even be filled right away.
Works every time and ZERO leaks or seeping.

Sounds good, but is the gasket by itself adequate?

EDIT
I meant to say just outside the bolt holes when the cover uses bolts.
For studs like an 8.75 uses the bead can usually be just inside the studs.
OR all the way around bolt holes or studs is even safer.

The rear cover bolts go all the way through to oil, so you need to RTV on the outter circumference of the bolt holes so the oil cant come down through the threads and come out from under the cover.

Sorry about that.
