This might sound a little stupid, but I rather be safe than sorry. I figure there have been others out there that have done this and know the in's and out's of it. I received my car back all painted on the underside and top side and while looking it over in my driveway I noticed that the rear shocks were not attached. When my friend, (which is a Chey Man) was putting it back together, the brackets that are under the springs and bolt on the shocks were backwards. I have to now switch them over. I'm doing this in my driveway and I am an old fart. I have the car jacked-up and on jacks that support the body. Rear wheels are wedged to stop it from rolling. The front end is also up on a couple of ramp type supports. The rear wheels are just, just off the ground. Also I have supported the rear end or third member,(I think what it's called) so it doesn't flip over when unbolted. Now the question is, can I undo the U-brackets bolts that tie in the axle and springs, take the shock support brackets off and switch them back to the correct side and then reverse the order to put it back together. Can this be done safely this way. Thanks Ed.............

Sounds like you got it covered. Don't forget to torque the u-bolts correctly.

getting the nuts off and on those U bolts may be the hard part.
I do not use ramps. Its a hill and a cliff In my opinion.
The wheel can roll down one side or drop off the other.

Maybe I didn't elaborate enough sorry. The front wheels or front end are on the ramp style supports. I have jack stands supporting the rear end of the car on the frame just in front of the springs where it's bolted to the car. I was trying to get the car up level with the rear part of the car. Like having a hoist and the car up more, so it's easier and have more room to get under the car. The rear wheels are chaulked or wedged so when I undo the nuts of the u-bolts it drops and stays exactly where it was when bolted. This way all I have to do is switch the brackets and put the nuts back on and tighten. I hope that's the easiest way and the safiest.

Hi Ed

As long as your back wheels are in the air and you are not undoing your springs, The rearend will be sitting on your springs and shoud not move when you remove the plates. If you do not have a drive shaft attached, I would support the third member so it cannot spin. Just mount the plates the proper way and retorque.

Most of all never never never let a chebby guy fix your car.LOL.
