Removing the window felts

[68 CUDA FORMULA S]

Is there a way to remove the window felts from the inside upper door plastic panels of this 1974 Scamp without destroying the plastic panel itself? I tried on the old blue ones that were in the car to begin with and they just cracked all apart. I need to paint the new ones so am I better off just taping them up and painting around the felts?

I did get one off by prying it open slightly and working it off. I was replacing the felts though. So, the safer way for the plastic that I came up with - used an angle grinder with a sanding disc to thin the edge of the metal till it takes almost no force to open it. the new ones I got are attached with screws, so I guess you could put screws in the factory ones if you wanted to re-use them and they won't clamp tight on the plastic.
