Repair frayed throttle cable?

My original throttle cable is frayed. Has anybody replaced the cable? I would think securing the end stops would be the challenge.

ps I did buy an expensive repro

a good bicycle shop or custom motorcycle shop could probably set you up with a custom cable.

once they're frayed like that, there's really no coming back and replacement is generally the best option-- generally because that means the inner liner is damaged as well.

I thought I would check before I tossed it. I am cussing trying to sort out my new cable/throttle bracket/Eddy 1906 carb linkage and about to go Lokar anyway.

that should pretty much be a slam dunk. you have the mopar throttle arm and stud that goes onto the stock eddy stuff?

or are you talking about 2bbl ==> 4bbl swap and that part of the linkage/cable hold down?
 
I've never been happy with the throttle cable set-up. Its an Edelbrock 1906 with the Mopar 1481 adaptor on top of an RPM intake. I have a Mancini (I think) cable bracket and it doesn't line up with the 1481 adaptor. The bracket puts the cable too far inboard and it seems too far forward. I would have been better off not using the 1481 adaptor. On top of that the cable seems too long as it sticks out of the pedal an inch or so. I just installed a new repro 340 cable and the bend is so hard that it won't go through the firewall straight. I spent a few hundred on the bracket and cable and am nearly done with it. I've used Lokar cables successfully before but I was going for a factory stock look this time...maybe not.

I saw someone fix a cable like that by wrapping it with a zip tie then pulling the zip tie over the frayed part while also twisting it.
 
Any good motorcycle shop should have the ferrules that can be sweedged onto the inner cable to shorten it.
 
Maybe adapt the bracket rearward somehow?

A cruise adapter bracket worked for me. Likely too high for yours....

I might buy a wire rope stop sleeve and crimper and see if I can make it work. The other option is to buy a universal throttle cable kit and use the parts for the carb end. I believe the stop is a set screw in the sleeve.

Bend it outward, and not just grab and bend
Put something between the bracket and value cover, or take it off, to give it a nice double curve or similar.
Bend the top to make it level again.
Drill extra holes to move the top part back farther.
Basically what I did when I had that setup.

If i take the adaptor off it should line up… tba

I don’t understand why u just didn’t buy the factory 340 bracket from Mancini. That cable doesn’t look right to me. The cable can be the right length but where it clamps to the bracket can and is lots of times in the wrong spot making u want to pull your hair out. Kim

I don't remember whose bracket that is. I don't have a stock carb or manifold so there is no guarantee a Mancini bracket would fit and it wouldn't be cheap as there shipping is expensive. I just installed a Lokar cable so problem is now solved. I fabbed a small bracket that bolts to the main bracket as I’m too cheap to pay $75 for the dinky Lokar bracket. Anybody want to buy a new repro 340 cable??

Watch the repop, I had brand new and the sheave that was sposed to hold it solid where it goes thru firewall let go immediately. Junk, got my money back tho.
Also the listed dimensions seem to vary a bit. I have new Lokar if you are looking.

I’d add spacers until the cable has a straight pull. If you don’t correct that it will keep eating cables.

Or, if you are like me and you don’t want to spend time at the lathe making a couple of spacers, you can get a big crescent wrench or some big channel locks and grab the bracket right where the cable is bolted down and bend the bracket up until it’s in line.

Either way is pretty easy.

I’m not a fan of much of what Lokar sells.

This is probably my 3rd or 4th Lokar cable (all on different cars) and they have been great.
