I'm going to get a sandblast (glassbead or whatever else you want to call it) cabinet for my shop. Anything you'd do different? I have lots of air volume and space for a bigger sized one. I think it should have a filtration system. What else?

i jsut bought the biggest one that harbor frieght sells, and let me tell you, it is awesome.

well, it was not great at first, cause i had no filtrations system for it. and when you use it, it builds up pressure inside from the air, and it lets the blast material out of every seem. especially the side door, and the front glass that you see out of.

so i devised my own air outake system. i took a old vaccuum cleaner that i had, and put it ouside my building, and then ran the hose right to the spot for it on the cabinet. now when i do sandblast, i can see now cause there is not alot of dust in it anymore. and also, now i have no issues with it leaking out the/any seams.

i paid 250.00 for it and a 50 lb. bag of media blast

Hey Daryl about the only thing I can think of is a pedal for it, instead of the gun. I bought mine from Princess Auto on sale for $150, its the table top version...wishing I had gotten the bigger stand up one. Mine has the hook up for the vacuum like 340plot, but I havent done done it yet. And yes mine builds up pressure and leaks out.

If you don't get a good filter/extraction system, get a good respirator. You don't want to get any lung diseases like silicosis. If you do it a lot, a comfy stool is a must!

I had the floor mount Princess Auto one, but I didn't really like it too much, so I took it back. I thought it was too small. I'd like to get one about 4 feet across or so. I'm thinking I might look for a used Mod-u-blast. They manufacture them in Edmonton, so parts would be readily available and from what I understand they are a quality machine.
Daryl

yea, i agree with the stool.lol my problem with mine, is i try to look to close inside as i blast, and i fog up the glass.lmao

I'd wear the respirator either way, even with a cabinet and evac system. Cheap health insurance, since you can't see a lot of the super fine dust floating around.

Have you shocked yourself on the end of the nose yet plot? Now that it's getting cold, the static will build up as fast as the steam. :-D

There's a couple really good threads on here about blast cabinets and setup Daryl; let me know if you have trouble with the search and I'll dig the threads up for you.

^^^^^^^^^^^^no, not yet, but if i leave my hand sit on the cabinet, i feel the little shock. and it is not like a single shock, but a continuous one.lol. i kinda like the feeling :)

I bought a stand up one also, i had lots of problems with leaks at seams (using glass beads), so i took it back apart and siliconed every seam. I also use a old vacuume, works great now.

A vac is a must.shop vacs work great. and yes ground yourself unless you like that tingle. Don't make the mistake I did and not get one big enough. I wish mine was big enough for wheels to fit in and have working room.
