If you can tell me what year make and model I will tell you how to adjust it.

wow I cant believe I left that out its a 318/904 in a 73 duster with a promatic 2 shifter

Sorry for the delay in answering.
I only get on here in the morning as I am in the machine shop all day. Just finishing up a 650HP 440 with aluminum heads that has been taking all my time.
Ratchet the shifter to the first gear position. Get under the car and move the lever on the trans all the way towards the rear of the car. That should be 1st gear. Adjust the cable so that the hole just drops over the pin. Try and start and move the car. If it will not start in park or neutral you might have to slightly move the cable forward or backward to get it exactly right. A slight amount of movement on the cable can make a big difference inside the case. It is not unusual to adjust it and have it not feel right. If that happens go back through the procedure again. It takes a little bit of patience to get it right.

Is there a chance I mounted the bracket backwards? it seems to be close to 1st gear when in park. I cant find pictures anywhere

Thats the problem i can't get it to mount up any other way. It just doesn't seem to fit so i think I am just not seeing something. I will give it another look when I get under it next. Thanks

Post some photos if you can. Some aftermarket shifters can be a real PITA to get adjusted right. Sometimes you have to use all the parts that came in the kit, other times you have to use some of the factory parts. Add to that, reverse and standard shift pattern and rear/front cable mount, and you can get a bunch of combinations.

well the shifter is the same. The cable broke so I am replacing it. the cable is the only part that is different.

Fixed it! I was under the impression that park was all the way forward. that definetly explains why the shifter seemed backwards
