Shifter knob removal?

I was wondering how to remove the stock shifter knob on a 73 dodge dart. It is automatic on the column. The black knob is what I need to know how to get off. I cant find any type of screw on it and I cant get it to screw off.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

They are press fit. If you can remove it without damage you be one of the luck ones! After removing the shifter handle from the column, I wrapped a couple of 2"x4"'s with rags and taped the teeth of a pipewrench with duct tape. Squeezed the handle between the 2"x4"'s in a vise and and gently put the pipewrench around the handle and tap down with a deadblow hammer.

Same as the end on the signal lever, wasn't meant to be removed. Good luck

If the shifter handle is off the column you might try this. Get a pan of boiling water and put the shifter knob down in it ,holding on to the other end. Let it get good and warm pull it out wrap a towel around the knob and twist. You may have to repeat a couple times. We used this trick when I was a meat cutter. We used to make our own sharpening steels and we would rob the plastic handles off of old Stanly screw drivers.
Be careful as 40 year old plastic can get brittle.

i have used a propane torch on the metal section below the knob and vise grips, if you arent worried about melting the inside of the knob

Thanks for the input guys. I had a spare column, and I used a part of vice grips and twisted the knob and then pulled and it popped right off. It did strip some plastic out though, and It has little teeth marks now on the knob.
I was wanting to take the one off my car though, and I didnt really want to destroy it.

I think if you warm it up first it would go easier. It exspans the plastic. Wrap it with a rag when using pliars.
