Shock Plate differences

Are there a difference in shock plates. When I pulled my rear one of the shock studs were broken on my shock plate. I wound up picking up a pair cheap on Ebay. When I got them one was different from the other. Of course the seller didn't state that in the auction.

I have one that looks like this.

The one I have with he broken studs look like these.

I have noticed people selling them both stating they are for an 8 3/4.

Is one maybe a lot stronger? I bought a pair off of ebay awhile back, the guy said they were for an 8 3/4 rear and were repainted. When I got them they were brand new and powder coated, never used! They were way more heavy duty (thicker) than the stock original ones I had, also a little different but mine fit fine.

I got hosed on ebay. some azzhole sent me 7 1/4 shock mounts. I ended up getting the mancini ones.

Same thing here. Bad thing was I didn't look at them close enough when they arrived. Just noticed they looked nice and gave the guy good feedback. 3 months later when I finally got around to installing the rearend I found out the hard way they weren't right. Ended up cutting one of the shock studs off and welding it onto my old mount so I could get it together.

Yup that's what I did. I got them gave a quick look and said cool. Left feedback and then pulled them out of the box and notice they were different. I have a broken shock stud on one. I got both for the price of the studs. They were already blasted and primed I was just gonna paint them black and put them on. Now I think I just might replace the stud on the one that I have broken blast and paint it.

I used 7.25 shock plates by elongating the holes the u-bolts go through so the 3" u-bolt would fit.

Isn't that un-safe? The 8 3/4 shock plates are different, stronger and more beefy. Wouldn't elongating the holes on the 7 1/4 piece make it even weaker? :scratch:

The only difference I have seen between the 2 1/2" shock plates and the 3" shock plates is a slight increase in the length to accommodate the larger u-bolt. The 1/4" elongation on each side is not significant in the overall strength on the plate. Plus the plates are not subjected to huge loads anyway so I see no issue.

It's been like that for a little over 30K miles, the bolts haven't loosened up and nothing has shifted.

I elongated the holes on mine to too.. No problems yet...
