Hi there any help here is greatly appreciated. What are ppl using with big bolt wheels that use 1/2 inch studs when the car has 7/16 studs. I’m wanting to put factory magnum 500s on it. Is the taper the same on 7/16 and 1/2 inch wheel nuts. Thanks. Kim

A 4.5" bp wheel will always be drilled for 1/2". 4" bp are drilled for 7/16.

Aŕe you saying you have a 4.5" bp with 7/16 studs?

Hi Kim, the question is a little unclear. As Jeremiah says all 5x4.5" wheels are to be used with 1/2 studs and nuts? Which is what’s used on cars with 5x4.5 hubs and axles?

Why would/or what car do have that has 4.5"pattern that uses a 7/16” stud?

Beyond all that I’m pretty sure they both use a 60 degree conical nut, so if a 7/16" nut were used on wheels intended for 1/2" studs and nuts the 7/16 nuts would/should work but would be more deeply seated into the cone part of the wheel. You’d want to make sure there is enough contact made and also that the nut didn’t poke through the back side and touch the hub/axle preventing tightening all the way?

This is on my 68 Dart. The front and rear are big bolt pattern now. They used the 7/16 studs from the 4 inch pattern. Then I’m assuming they drilled the bigger pattern and re used the 7/16 studs. I hope they didn’t weld them in. I may have to install 1/2 inch studs. I’ll access it this weekend as it in storage 80 miles from home. Years ago I had a Demon with Centeines. The nuts were the shank type with the washers. They fit the studs and rims perfectly.

As long as the bevels fit and line up good, I wouldn't see an issue using the 7/16" studs with the 1/2" holes in the larger bolt pattern wheels. The wheels don't center on the studs anyway. They center on the hub. As long as there's good bevel engagement, I don't see an issue. There's only a .0625" difference between 1/2" and 7/16". That's only .0312" per side. Not much.

But being sbp to start with the axle center hubs are way smaller than the rim center. I would have to get some spacers rings made then.

Gotchya. This is a decision I am having to make right now. Large or small bolt pattern. I have both front brake assemblies to make it happen.

Well the thieves stole the sbp rims and tires and put the bbp on. I’m not sure if they changed all the pieces from another car or did the bbp the the darts stuff.

I don’t have much faith in the police getting my stuff back that the thieves stole off of the car. The police said the ppl freely admitted that they took the stuff off but it was of no use to them so they threw it away. So now the police are saying there is no evidence so they can’t get it back or charge them with stealing. What a crock of ****. I wanted to ask the cop if he was ******* retarded? I asked him where they got all the old **** to put back on it?

I would be raising hell about all that. City council, Mayor and the local News.

Thats like saying you shot the crooks and admitted to it but threw the gun away so they have no evidence .

:wtf:

I run mags and can't guarantee you because they are shank fit, but I would put 20 bucks on the lug nut taper sitting in the hole just fine. Now I will go out to the shop and look at both styles of lug nut....... I gotta know too!

1/2” on the left. 7/16” on the right. Obviously these may be different than yours, but the outer dimension of the bore is the same. The 1/2” is just way thinner.

I guess it will depend on whether they are 3/4" or 13/16" as that could be a larger mating surface.

There is some of each on the car now. I’ll have to buy new nuts. But with out the rims riding on the studs or the centers I’m a little leary.

Do you have large bolt pattern knuckles/spindles? And or large bolt pattern axles? you could just convert to large bolt pattern properly?

I don’t like it when people re-drill **** to accommodate lager bolt pattern. Gets too close to the edge of the axle flange (I’ve seen a lot of cracking between the stud and the edge of the flange) not sure about the front hubs and what they look like after being drilled.

Or, do you have spare small bolt pattern stuff to convert back?

I think having hub centric wheels is nice, especially if it was Joe blow doing the drilling and converting to 5x4.5. You never know what kind of job they did doing that. Maybe it’s not centered properly?

I have a set of new 10” front brakes with small bolt pattern, spindles, control arms etc, if you’re looking for parts and want to convert back.

Also, maybe if the old holes aren’t damaged you could re-install new studs in the old holes that were 5x4 bolt pattern and then just get new wheels for that pattern?

I’ll know more on Sunday. I already have bbp rims so it would be easier to go that way.

I went out back and measure the conical seats on a set of sbp wheels vs bbp. Both wheels had .530" ish holes. The taper on the bbp wheels was wider than the sbp wheels. I think you will be okay.
