Fiat Chrysler hit with record $105 million fine, must buy back hundreds of thousands of Ram trucks

"
DETROIT -- Fiat Chrysler must offer to buy back from customers more than 500,000 Ram pickup trucks and other vehicles in the biggest such action in U.S. history as part of a costly deal with safety regulators to settle legal problems in about two dozen recalls.

The Italian-American automaker also faces a record civil fine of up to $105 million. In addition, owners of more than a million older Jeeps with vulnerable rear-mounted gas tanks will be able to trade them in or be paid by Chrysler to have the vehicles repaired.

The settlement is the latest sign that auto safety regulators are taking a more aggressive approach toward companies that fail to disclose defects or don't properly conduct a recall."

"The Ram pickups, which are the company's top-selling vehicle, have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control. Some previous repairs have been unsuccessful, so Fiat Chrysler agreed to the buyback, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."

"Today's action holds Fiat Chrysler accountable for its past failures, pushes them to get unsafe vehicles repaired or off the roads and takes concrete steps to keep Americans safer going forward," Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in the statement.

In a separate statement, Fiat Chrysler said it accepted the consequences of the agreement "with renewed resolve to improve our handling of recalls and re-establish the trust our customers place in us."

Yea, they'll buy them back and repair them and resell. They know how to fix it, by welding in additional links.
There not going to to give enough money to buy a new truck.

what year trucks are they concerned about ?

I would not plan on a blue book price. It will more likely be like the insurance payout which is what they call actual cash value...................Actually alot less than a real value.

According to the article it said purchase price minus depreciation. If I read it correctly.

It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't recover from this. This is huge.

Has anyone cared to notice the date on that article? It kills me when stuff like this is slung around like it just Happened. Fyi the number of actual trucks affected was fractional compared to this TEN MONTH OLD article. And very few were buy backs.

Hey have you guys heard the charger is coming back as a 4 door? Lol

Really.... is that the best You can do?You must be spent from trying to figure out how to turn the "k" around backwards........:poke:....... the reality is "corp. America" is in survival mode after irrational regulatory assaults & impositions, and being victimized by the legalized racketeering by intl. financiers in our market & economy. And the people involved are displaying the CYA and don't tell me what I don't want to hear, that a lot of people seem fond of these days. Putin would tell you to like the steering or He will kick you in the face lol!!!

Technically I didn't get a buy back offer, but right around the time this was making the news last year I was looking for a new truck anyway. I took my 2011 (later to find out it qualified for buy back) to the dealer for trade in on a new truck. I paid $29k for the truck back in 2010, they gave me $24k as trade in, 5 years later. I don't know if it was because they knew it was going to be a buy back or not, but I had no complaints at all with that offer, no haggling or anything, they said they would give me 24 for it, so I took it, maybe I should have asked for more.

Sounds like it was a fair offer to me. Hard to retain that much value after 5 years.

I thought it was an outstanding offer, I just threw that out there in response to bobscuda saying they wouldn't give enough to buy a new truck. They gave enough to cover a lot of the cost on a new one.
