Space between radiator and fan

What is the best distance the fan should be from the radiator for optimum cooling?

I believe it is from 3/4"-2".

As close as possible, but at least 3/4 inch, to allow for movement, and not hit the radiator.
A fan shroud makes a big improvement, and if you have the room a 5 blade fan, with a thermostatic clutch.

Derale fans recommend fan spacing as follows:

W/shroud Measure the distance from the water pump flange to the edge of the shroud and add 3/4 inch.

w/o shroud Measure the distance from the water pump flange to the radiator and subtract 3 inches.
