Just wondering what others are using.
Just normal electronic distributor Orange (and Chrome) boxes and low-end Copper Plugs. Like Autolite 3924, NGK 7938 , Champion 71
Factory says .035 or reinvent the wheel?

Plus, to regap an 035 plug to say 045, you sorta need the right tool, else the strap ends up angled, and the spark may originate in the wrong place.
Just prying the end open is a bad idea.

if you change nothing else
the bigger the gap, the higher the voltage needed to jump it, and therefore the shorter the duration.

power is current (the flow) x volts (the push) and you didn't change the coil so the power available to be used as a combination of current and volts is the same.
higher voltage creates high current for a very very short time and a current flow in general across the gap for a shorter time, You would use less of your reserves of power to jump a smaller gap therefore maintaining a spark for longer. but it may not be good enough to light off a highly compressed mixture.
compress more atoms/molecules that are not of uniform size shape or chemistry into the gap between the contacts you massively increase the number of atoms that need to have their electrons ripped off to make a spark in the first place. you need to rip off enough electrons from enough of them on the path between the electrodes so they can cycle across untethered from their home atoms, carrying the spark.. you are making a tiny plasma path...

higher voltages more quickly degrade the silicone core spiral wound wires we all use.....

its a compromise like everything else

I would use a bigger gap with HEI. Some HEI engines had 0.080" plug gaps. I run 0.070" gaps with Irid plugs, have done for years

At least TWO manufacturers took the time & expense to build engines that had a separate, mini combustion chamber next to the main chamber & connected by a small port. The idea was to get a bonfire going in the small chamber & ignite a leaner mixture in the main chamber. It shows the importance placed on heat in igniting the spark.
While it is true that a high-er current spark has shorter duration, the inductive spark [which is what is being used here ], has about 10 times longer duration than a CD ign spark. So the spark already has plenty of duration.
The benefit of Plat or Irid plugs is that they require less firing voltage. So you can have a longer spark without overloading the ign system.
