Speedo cable

-
What engine/trans combo? In my slant six/904 trans if you follow the speedo cable it goes under the car and mounts about mid way on the drivers side of the trans. It is held in place by a single bolt.

273 to a 904. I have the cable off I just want to know if the end fittings (what goes into the speedo and what goes into the trans) can easily be removed so I can change the cable that is frayed with a new one.

Is what you have a metal tube that looks like Romex house wire? If so they can be taken apart but they are crimped on and it will not be easy to clean out a twisted cable. I ended up cutting a section out of mine and then ripping and prying to get it back together

Grab inner cable at the speedometer end and slide it out.
Lube the new one with something like silicone spray or a light grease and slide the new one back in.
When it gets close to all the way in, twist it back and forth a little with your fingers and it will go right back into place in the gear in the trans.
It's really easy, you'll see.

Thanks so far for the help... So here's whats going on I the cable was snapped in the middle which I was unaware of. So I have the 2 ends, what screws into the speedo and the part that goes in the 904. The metal "covering" is shot. What would happen if I where to crimp the wire into the end that goes in the trans and put a cover (some kind of conduit over the inner cable) so it could spin freely but not be exposed. Any thoughts?
