The needle is easy to put back on as I have had mine off a couple of times.
Also, since they do come off easy it very well could be a dry cable that caused enough force to vibrate the needle off.

If you hold the round part on the back of the speedometer that spins you can gently work the needle back on without damaging anything.
Then disconnect the cable from the trans and pull the center out semi gently :D lube it with any number of lubes and slide it back in twisting it as it gets ready to bottom out back in the cable housing. (I like graphite powder for this) but a light grease will work also as long as it's not wheel bearing grease or anything that heavy.
Heck, even Vaseline works just fine.
As it bottoms out in the housing it should not be able to turn anymore, and then re connect it to the trans.

You can use a drill or something along that line to run the speedo while it's out and see if it acts normal-ish.

I have sent several speedometers to IIRC Denver Speedometer where they have cleaned, repaired and calibrated them. 2 of them were early A KPH speedos

I've been wrong before but I think the stem is broken off and still inside the needle.

doh!

I think you are right.
Is it possible that the pin is made on the needle and it slips into the center of the mechanism?

Only other thing I can imagine and it couldn't hurt to try it.
You can't really make things worse at this point.

If its the speed cable itself you can buy a universal repair kit for 4 bucks at auto zone you just replace the metal cable with a new one and remember to cut it pretty close to exact, tack weld the piece onto the gear or you can use jb weld and remember to put some grease down the sleeve and also a little behind the gauge itself. good luck

Not exactly a hijack, just revealing... I sent this member a PM stating I felt like I could repair this speedometer. I asked him to keep my offer under his hat 'cause I cant take in everybodys everything. I now know this is my final attempt at helping with instrument repairs. Anyway... after much effort I now have a "Parts Wanted" thread for a similar speedometer. Help us if you can...
