The Bearings were used by the machinist. The Light Blue Lube that is still on the crank is what I'm assuming stained the bearings. Parts sat over the winter in heated garage. Bearings are about the least expensive part in the build and don't want to use them if there is ANY question about there integrity. Never let any sit that long before... :violent1: Just don't know if there is something in the assy. lube that could degrade the Cleavites. or just stained them. Thanks, C300

That almost looks like electrolysis. Its really hard to judge from the pic.
I would be tempted to put a razor blade to it and see if it is soft.
Also, bear in mind that that material is somewhat porous and soft.So I can understand that a dye would penetrate.
What do you think was the reason for applying the dye?

I don't think it's the lube. There are spots I can see blue lube on and the bearing itself is not discolored. It looks more to me like the block was damp in the oil galleys when it was assembled and that's delamination starting. Might be me - but I would replace them. Like you say - why risk it for $200.

these bearings have not been used/run or installed. lower halves still in rapper. looks like the machinist stuck the upper half of the bearing in. then dropped the crank in. stuck a rod and piston assy. in with upper half to check for the 0.00" deck i requested. not sure why the lube ate/stained the surface. i didn't think to clean the lube off.
I have built engines that I put lots of lube on and sat till the car was done, but didn't pull them back apart. just added oil and fired em up. old hotter plugs and ran till smoke stopped and was good and hot. break in run. maybe i should do the engine last now. don't know. not sure who to ask... weird

So i read this, thoughts ?

Looks like copper oxide going by that sheet. I was leaning towards the tin oxide which is a problem.

that's what i was thinking. Thanks for the Moral support  I'll call Hughes tomorrow anyways, guess the plastic wrap will leave the kitchen and they will get re wrapped next time !

I still wouldn't use them. As said before, why take a chance on the damage it might do. Way more trouble than a new set of bearings.

Hughes says use, i use. if not, I'll have them send out a new set. if they are just stained, then they are just stained. they feel smooth, so not corroding, or tin oxide... Working too many hours to get this done in a reasonable amount of time...
