Steering Column Auto or Manual

I have a 71 Duster that was a manual /6. I am putting in a 340 and 727 auto transmission. Will I need to replace the steering column to an auto steering column or will the manual one work? Should this be done before or after the engine & transmission are in?

i but a manual column from a /6 duster in my duster and it bolted right in no problems

You can do this before engine and transmission are in and there is no need to replace the steering column.

I would think that you'll need a column for automatic trans unless you install a floor shifter.

If you have bucket seats, a no brainer. Put in an aftermarket floor shifter.
