Im rebuilding the steering column in my 68 Barracuda. I dont know if its the original column or not, but that doesnt matter.

The car was, I think, a floor shift automatic.

When I took the column apart there was a tube inside, over the shaft. It has a spring at one end. It's pretty ratty. I was thinking of ditching it. The steering section of the 68 shop mandoesn't snt mention this piece. Can I get rid of it, or does it serve some necessary function.

Thanks.

Maybe it's a shift tube, pretty hard to tell from here, maybe a few photos would help my tired old eyes. I would NOT remove anything without making sure it is what it is.......

Thats what i thought. But there's no shift arm on the bottom and the column has no provision at the base where the slot would be for the shift arm to move in. Ill post up a pic of it in a little.
