If you are sure nothing else is worn out you could try to losen the nut on top of the box and titen the ajuster (screw dirver slot)trun it down tel you fell it get snug and back off 1/4 turn.then hold the screw whil titening the nut.this should help.mybe sumone can put up a picture of what im talking about.....if this dosent work it's time for a box............Artie

thanks i will try that if it does not work i will have to bite the bullet a get a new box thanks

........get a service manual, it will show u the proper procedure....1st off u loosen the top nut, back off the adjuster 1/2 turn.......go to the rear of the box[where the input shaft from the column comes in] loosen the big retaining ring, snug up the bearing by tuning clockwise, then backoff 1/8th turn.....tighten retainer......then turn the slotted adjuster till no play, back off 1/8th turn, then tighten lock nut.....then u should have next to nothing 4 play in the wheel.....make sure the 3 bolts holding the steering box to the frame are tight...kim.......

That should help some but if there is any thing else wrong it won't help much make sure that every thing else is good then adjust it

........get a service manual,.

And you can download the 72 manual right here for free:

The thread: There are several manuals posted, but you have to scroll down, as some of the earlier links are broken, fixed later

The 72 manual:

The shop manual does NOT recommend adjusting the screw/ lock nut (sector) until you FIRST adjust the big nut on the steering shaft (worm bearing)
