Stock-ish 383 Build

Do yourself a YUGE favor and get a custom cam. Instead of trying to match your CR to a cam, set the CR and get a cam to work with what you have.

Would I rather have 10:1? Absolutely. I would do what it takes. In fact, I'm running 11.07:1 on cast iron heads. But, for YOU, I'd say what everyone else is saying. Get the CR you can and cam for it. You don't need 10:1 to make 375 HP from a 383. And that is enough HP to go low low 12's in a B body. And 75 more HP than almost every 500 HP small block Chevy out there.

I did find in our stash of parts some 906 heads that we are going to drop off at the machine shop today.

So any other suggestions on cam choice?

Are you going to run the dome pistons with those 906 heads?

If you prefer and off the shelf cam I'd go with one of the following three. Probably in this order.

Crane
684561

MPP
P4120659AE

Crane
684571

Awesome! thank you for that, Ill give those a look see.

Any company to get pistons from? or not get them from? I know someone suggest KB, any other manufacturers I should look at?

So the engine is at the machine shop with all the parts he needs to fit up the heads and get the bores true and proper. Since this was brought up in this thread, what exhaust would be the best to go with? I was thinking the TTi shorty headers with their exhaust system and tail pipe extensions. I am going to be running power steering as well. Everything should clear, TTI just states to use a different Z-bar, which I will have to get or modify the one I have.

Now someone said to use the schumacher headers, but their web site says their hearders require modification to work with the manual transmission. I would like to assemble this with as little trouble as possible, but why would I use the shumacher over the TTI headers? especially if TTI says theirs work with the manual and schumacher says theirs does not?

With an Automatic, the Schumacher's are a little easier to install.

Given the cost of both of these headers there is no reason for you to run the Schumacher's. The TTI's drastically outperform the Schumacher headers and they'll be easier for you. I wouldn't want to be modifying a brand new set of headers, however the Zbar mod isn't a big deal.

I'd drop a 440 crank for the little bit of extra dough.
