Ed Iskendarian (Isky cams) and the hot rod he built to race at the dry lakes either just before or right after WWII. (He's still with us, BTW.)

Jim Lytle, who later built several Allison airplane engine powered drag cars, including the first flip-top fiberglass bodied drag car, ran this ad for his flamed Chrysler powered 32 Ford drag/show car around 1962.

His final effort (I think) was this four-Alison-engined Fiat Topolino. Never actually got it running due to lack of funds/development.
