working toward removing transmission. Came to remove drive shaft from the transmission. I removed the 4 nuts and found what i assume are very stripped bolts. Not sure if they are studs. Do these have to be removed?

No. Those are splined studs that remain in the flange. Very similar to a wheel stud. Nothing's wrong. They are fine. Very strong design, actually.

Appreciate the response I’m still learning this stuff. Having a hard time extracting the driveshaft. Any tips for removing the flange?

Why do you need to remove the flange? It doesn't need to be removed to get the drive shaft out.

Take a rubber mallet and give the trunnion housing a couple of sharp sideways smacks to loosen it up. It sits inside of a very slight recess in the flange so it can be a bit stubborn to come apart. The flange remains on the transmission.

Yes the driveshaft housing sits in a groove on the flange, persuade it a little. Use a prybar against the trans tunnel and pry it sideways.

The studs stay in the flange, don't try to pound them out. The flange is bolted to the output shaft.

The housing on the driveshaft is not spring loaded, the boot is stiff and will not allow it to move back very easily.

thanks everyone for the help as always. Unfortunately the boot on mine is trashed and slides in and out easily. This is as far as I’ve gotten under the circumstances.

OK I do not understand the problem. You have the trunnion joint loose from the flange. Perhaps you sorta pried it sideways and just bound up the bolts. is the REAR of the shaft disconnected from the axle? I would think a big screwdriver, prying one side and then the other, would work it right out.

Remove all 4 nuts first, then pull the housing back off the studs. It is loose already. The flange is bolted to the trans. You cannot get the flange off without getting the driveshaft out of the way.

That cover comes with the boot kit. I take it that you marked the drive shaft so that you can put it back in the same way?

Don't complain, LOL We could all be dealing with torque tubes. Off hand, I'd bet AMC was the last one to ditch THAT mess.
