Some of you may remember I purchased a used diff with 2 gear sets one was a 3:23 sure grip and the other a 3:91. I'm stripping the parts and cleaning everything up in order to send out to my Diff guy to replace the bearings and seals and to swap the 3:91 gear set into the housing with the sure grip assembly.

While getting everything done, I noticed that the the sure grip assembly was shot as the pin running through it has ruined the assembly. Does anybody know where I can find a new one? Also, it would be helpful to know the exact correct name for the part before I start looking for it. Crown and pinions both look fine. Thanks in Advance!

You'll need a whole new sure grip unit. Here's what causes that. At some point, one wheel spun. When that happens, it heats up the spider gears so much, that they weld themselves to the pinion cross shaft and it spins in the case, ruining the case. So the case, cross shaft and pinion spider gears are all done. The only parts availability for the cone style sure grip are good used parts, as no one sells anything new.

I noticed the ones I found on line look different. is there a way I can upgrade to the newer non cone type?

Make sure your axle spline count is the same.

Is your diff guy a shop or a buddy? If a shop they might be able to get a clutch type cheaper that you can.

Also ...

The eBay ones are of Unknown quality. They may be fine especially for crushing but unknown how they last under harsh conditions

Cass at Dr Diff disassembles all of his and makes upgrades to them to tighten them up a bit and to assure everything is in perfect working order. If you get some stupidness off ebay and get ripped off, it's your own fault. Cass stands 100% behind his products. Yes, he is a little higher, but you get what you pay for.

I have no doubt Cass and co are great, but he's 1,500 miles away in Las Vegas. The damn thing must be close to 100 lbs. and I don't want to ship it. I have to find a solution closer to home.

Man, all this nonsense with Canada shippin back and forth even pisses ME off. I can only imagine how yall feel. He's in Montana. Not Las Vegas, though.

When I google the name Las Vegas came up as the post was about attending a SEMA show and I read it wrong. Still too far and cross bordery. I will find somebody local.

There is a pin that stops the spider shaft from spinning. The opposite end is usually the side that gets hammered into this condition. Cause by High RPM's going from forward to reverse or abusive neutral drops. That rear has been abused and rebuilding the sure grip is a waist of time.

I was never planning on rebuilding it, I want to upgrade it with a better clutch type instead of cone type.

ALL 8 3/4s are 30 spline, except aftermarket 35 spline spools and axles.

A few decades ago, I made the rounds and collected a pile of suregrips from local picNpulls. From the gleaned parts, I rebuilt several of those banged out cases;
I took them to my favorite local machine shop, who fixed the saddles up stronger than new. The cases were no longer a problem.
Finding good used guts, was.
After I cleaned up the cones, I restored the clearances with shims as was required, reset the cone-preloads to suit my combos. and then I stuck the reconditioned cases into various chunks from 2.76s to 4.30s, and from there into my cars, some of which were from 330 to 430 hp, and ran the crap out of them.
Some say that they are not rebuildable. ......... IDK what that's about. We recondition/rebuild 50/60/and 70 year old engines, transmissions , and carbs don't we? Com'on, compared to those, rearends are nothing.

I might still have one or two kicking around. Since yur practically next door, ............
