Swapping a A833OD for a A833

-
People just keep telling me the aluminum OD trans sucks.
Not all people.

People told me the OD833 sucks, that it required all sorts of different parts and was a waste of time & $.

Then I put it behind a bb and drove it cross country.

Heck, people who have a 5 or 6 speed tell me my A833 non OD trans sucked, and why bother, just cut the car up, buy all sorts of different parts and spend time & $.

It's all relative.

A deep first leads to a big drop in RPM into second gear
I found if you don't wind the heck out of first, second picks up nicely.
If you wind the heck out of first, let the rpms come down a bit before going to second.

It's definitely a different animal.

Agreed. I had a 2bbl. 318 Duster with a manual 3spd. Deep first gear as well. 3.21 gears and stock tires. I found that racing the first gear up high is just like you said. IMO, you have the non experienced over play the deep gear and big drop into second as a really bad thing. I didn’t find it so. Just as you said though. Rev it up a bit more than a normal 4spd and just slide into second. Knowing where second gear likes to be picked up or where the drop is - is the key.

I’m setting up for a 4spd-OD trans out of a truck for my B body. It also has 3.55’s rolling on 27.5 tires powered by a 5.9 Magnum. I think this will be a good cruiser and be pretty OK as a warmed up street car.

Ditto-ish.

Swapping out my A833 to an A833OD in my b-body, 383 with 3.55s and 28 tires.

Same deal as my a-body, stock aluminum bell, same linkage, same shifter, just different 3/4 rod.

I passed on driving it the 6 or 8 hrs, whatever it would take, to Carlisle, or anywhere long distance, because I wanted to hear myself talk and have a conversation along the way.

Tired of not getting out and really driving, distance, and enjoying all my hard work.

There is no magic bullet direct bolt in OD manual trans coming to rescue us Mopar people - oh wait, it already exists, readily available, and inexpensive.

@matthon My ‘79 Magnum is currently, what I’d called, pretty quite with the ability to speak at a slight up tone in the voice. Bare metal floors currently. Carpet and sound deadened will go a long way.

Hooker 1-3/4 into true 2-1/2 duals with long Dyno Max super turbos. This will be addressed down the line for quiter exhaust.

The ears don’t ring but are slightly taxed. I wish to avoid this issue.

Besides these stock offerings for a bolt in and go OD trans, what’s out there?
