OK, I am stumped on this. I took the steering column out to do some other fixes on the coupler. I went to put the column back in turned the key to be able to clock the splines on the coupler to the gear box and now the switch will not go back to the lock position so I can remove the key. This is in my 72 dart with floor shift column without the key release lever. What am.i missing.

Have you tried turning the collar near the dash? My 70 Dart won't allow me to put the key in the lock position if that collar (which rotates without release lever) is not in the correct location.

That was it. Thanks a million times over. Too bad there isn't some way to lock that collar in the right position.

I didn't either... found out by accident when I was pissed off because I couldn't get my key back into the lock position LOL.

Some of those had a shifter interlock

It is a very minor albeit annoying problem. I've tried tightening mine up, but until I remove the dash again, I just have to deal with it twisting on me.

You have a 1970 floor shift column one year only. That year had linkage that you had to put in reverse if manual trans or neutral if automatic to remove the key. 1971 and newer have a depress to remove key button on the column seen here in front of the ignition for floor shift cars.

There is a lever in the engine compartment, that's the other end from the collar. Now wire it in the up position so it won't move.
