And at the firewall it would normally be grounded through the screw threads making metal on metal contact. It sounds like there is enough ground to activate the field coils. But trying a ground wire won't hurt.

I've never liked grounding using just bolt threads. There's just not a lot of contact area.

I don't like it either, just wanted to note that even a painted firewall will provide some ground.

Sometimes it's "just enough" ground to get something hot. lol
