The newest "building a slant six" thread

IMO the only "up" side if you can call it that is less noise. How much trouble is removing the valve cover MAYBE once every two years for valve adjustments? Honestly, if someone is going hydraulic for that reason, there's always stamp collecting. LOL

This is primarily my wife's car, the lifter noise bothers her, she thinks something is wrong with the motor.

I completely understand. Is there no talking her around it? Let her know the slant 6 was originally designed as a solid lifter and it's completely normal. Explain to her that the hydraulic lifter slant 6s never had the performance or reliability. In fact, a lot of times the hydraulic lifter slant 6s also have valve train noise, because it takes a pretty good minute to get oil to the lifters if it sits several days. Just food for thought.

The only cam info that is in the FSM is the specs for the original equipment cams. Is that what you are looking for?
Absolutely. At an "opens 6deg BTDC", it'd work out to a 224deg cam if it followed the same progression as the solids.
8*BTDC-228*
10*BTDC-232*
16*BTDC-244*

Back in the /6 days, you could hear someone drive up with the tappity-tap going on & knew it was most likely a slant before ever looking at the car. That's part of their personality!

Yeah, she is not that hooked on it, and I am fundamentally lazy and don't like to work too hard if I can help it.

You do realize, as long as everything is in good order, the valves rarely need adjusting. You can do like I did with mine and tight lash them. The spec on my cam was .020/.020 and I went .008 and .010....but only after I contacted Ken at Oregon cam to make sure it was ok.

Actually the very first thing I did, since I had a valve cover leak on the 170

Well, if she's bound and determined to have a hydraulic lifter engine, we'll do our best to help you make it a goodun.

every slant that I set the valves on, once done, was almost silent.... but started out "way" outta whack. and noisey. My son's 80 truck is the 1st that came my way that was quiet

send her this way, let her read, she'll say that this is the way they are "supposed to" sound.

Okay, got a cam going to oregon cams today or tommorow! Talked with them on the phone, I think he said the best was something like an RA18? Sound right? So this build is going to get started the minute those cams arrive in the mail, though going to start griding on the exhaust manifold this weekend
