The 'Quickest' A-Body Small Blocks

-
Obvious Facts,

The 340 4-Speed {Barracuda , Duster, Dart and Demon} will hook up much better
than a nose-heavy 1969 440 'Cuda.

Also, take into consideration, both cars are running E70 x 14" Tires.

Remember, these are the 'best' times ever recorded for the 'stock' 340 A-Body, not the
general average.
Oh in that case 71 Duster 340, 3.91 4-speed - 13.81 @ 101.49 MPH

I started in F/PS and moved to E. Engine factored by NHRA
My best was a 14:50 flat. BONE stock. I will go along with the 13:89 and 13:90 after seeing who worked on the cars and knowing the Pure Stock rules. This just proves the potential of the cars. The E/PS record at TV was a 14:35 back then. I was just a dumb kid, but could have got there with a little help.

The Sox and martin ad sold cars, no doubt. I attended one of their seminars in Brookings, SD. Huge crowd!

Curt Rees

Why would it matter who worked on the cars if they really were "bone" stock? This is what is being challenged here, what is really stock and what is OK to cheat on a little. Then if you were really being honest you would go with more of an average as some are bound to be better then others. The Sox car's motor was probably completely torn down and blue printed to a much higher level then the average off the assembly line, or he was given one specifically built that way. I doubt it was just a random car bought off a random dealer showroom floor and then taken to the strip. So as pointed out, they get high 13's, sell a bunch of cars, most never see a dragstrip but the ones that do never see 13's bone cold pure stock. Then they only stay in that state a few trys before the owners move on with normal mods.

I can think of a bunch of things you could do to "cheat" a "bone" stock car to run a little better. I imagine long time drag racers in the day new 10 times more then I could ever dream of. Especially if the goal was making a bone stock car a little faster then the others and not last 100s of thousands of miles as your daily driver.
Here are just a few I thought of in 5 minutes of thought...

You know they will weigh the car overall bit will they check weight distribution? Moving some weight around might help, some lighter parts in the front offset by a sand filled spare tire maybe?
What about shocks? Maybe you could modify a set of factory shocks into drag shocks or at the minimum use a set of wore out factory shocks on the front.
You could paint on some diesel/kerosene mix to your tires and soften them up quite a bit.
You could run light weight oil everywhere because you could care less if it lasts more then a few runs.

Going in to the motor opens up so many more cheats, no inspector or certifier will ever see or if you were on the assembly line hand picking the best casting heads, matching it with the best casting intake, rocker arms with the highest ratios of the pile, balance the crank but knife edge the weights and lighten it up.
Use a little thinner head gasket when you put it back together. Offset the cam a bit.

Like I said I'm sure they new 10 times as many tricks. This all came to it's glorious peak when they (the Dodge techs) delivered the super hot, preproduction, ringer Little Red Express for testing. There they went a bit to far but in the end beat the Corvette of the year.... What do you mean W2? Like the tax form?

I changed the oil in mine today, # 5. Attached a photo of it idling.

Changing out the clutch package and flywheel on Wed. 742 case in a week or so will be changed also.

Notice the short trophy on the roof. Took the 14 Ram 4wd, 4dr, short box to the track Sat. Runnered up in Street Trophy. Tow haul on, traction control off, 4wd engaged. 15:54, 89 mph in the final, broke out, to much Hemi power! lol It was not "bone stock", I took the air filter out.

The factory or dealer "tune ups" to sell cars was done long before Ma MOPAR did it. Anybody remember Jim Wangers of Royal Bobcat GTO fame? 66, I believe.

Somebody posted earlier that they were the wrong generation. That 7 year period from 1964 to 1971 was a great time to be a gear head! I bought every car magazine I could find and drooled!

Curt,

* 1969 Barracuda 'cuda 340 ~ 4-Speed ~ 3.91 Gears

* 13.97 @ 100.40 MPH

* #5 .... As the 'quickest' A-Body Small block

I stand corrected and edited my post. Got # 7 on my mind for some reason.

I ordered the car specificly to drag race, thus the 4 speed and 3:91 gears. I did not want under coating but the dealer talked me into it.

The car has had one paint job many years ago, I am thinking 70's. If it were not for some cancer spots (left rear wheel well), I would clear coat it and leave it.

Curt,

Do you have the 'listed' Shipping Weight on that Pocket Rocket.

The NHRA book states .........1969 Barracuda 'Notchback' 340 .......... #3063 lbs.

The weight listed on the title is 2855. It was easy to move around before I got it running.

Canadian Nationals {September 1968}

1968 Dodge Dart GTS 340 ~ Automatic ~ 3.91 Gears

Gary Davlut of Penner Dodge-Chrysler Ltd. out of Winnipeg, Canada.

Class .......... E/PS 'Pure Stock'

Won the Canadian Nationals 'Pure Stock Eliminator' with a best time of ..... 14.21 @ 98.45 MPH

I have added some photos's taken in 1969 of my A56 Cuda. The photos are posted elsewhere, but since we were discussing "Pure Stockers", I thought they would be appropriate here also.

The best things about this, is I have the car back, and I still have the trophies. They have made many moves and miles over the last 45 years.

I had a good year at the track in 69! I have run Super Stockers since 1988 through 2013. None were as much fun as the 'Cuda!

Missing

Supposedly 'Speed and Supercar' took a 1971 Duster 340 ~ Automatic ~ 3.91 Gears
down to a 13.90.

It was stated that it was listed in Speed and Supercar {October 1971}.

No listing found...........

I took my A56 to KRP at Kearney, NE this past week end. I finally got everything right in the car to make a decent pass down the strip. I had put in a new Ram flywheel/clutch package and installed the 3:91 gears.

It some passes to get the rpm right on launch with the 4 speed so I did not go up in smoke. I made 4 passes in the 14's. The best being a 14:740 at 96.26. KRP is a factored track, 2100 feet. With the factor, the car ran a 14:50. this what it ran in 1969. I reached my goal for this year!

All this arguing over 340 times makes me glad I swapped out my crappy 340 for a 375hp 327 SBC.

I had the same late 68 build 69 Swinger. Auto 3.23 and no suregrip. I did swap the dist for a mallory dual point due to that auto's have a single point floater and I did richen up the primary a tad. I wiped the stock tires in no time and since I liked high speed road runs I shod the car with big G78 Goodyear radials for cornering ability. Lousy offline traction of course. My best with all the wheel spin in both first and second gear was 14.50 at 102 MPH. Even had a fotog taking pictures of my off the line struggles to not completely fry the right rear. I could not even get to full throttle until around 35 miles an hour and when I shifted to 2nd at around 65 MPH I had to back off the throttle to keep it from lighting up the right rear again. The most fun was chasing down Porsches on the coast highways. Never could top end the car. Got way too light in the front end at high speed. Speedo was a waste as I would peg it shortly after hitting high gear.

Pa Karp,

A little hard to read that small time slip. Does your 60ft say 2.28?

I'm sure you know, but that is where I would look for my lower ET's. If you could widdle that down to 2.0 or better yet 1.9xx you could probably run a 14.0 or a teen.
