The 'Quickest' A-Body Small Blocks

Pa Karp,

A little hard to read that small time slip. Does your 60ft say 2.28?

I'm sure you know, but that is where I would look for my lower ET's. If you could widdle that down to 2.0 or better yet 1.9xx you could probably run a 14.0 or a teen.

1970 Duster vs 1968 GTO - YouTube

Yes, 4 speed with radials. I literally had to leave at idle. I am learning to drive a 4 speed again, only the 8th pass in the car since 1969.

I also "granny" shifted to. Also, no tuning since I got it running. I think it will run 14:20's.

EL5 Demon,

I didn't post ET's, just the quickest in order.

What change would you make, Pray Tell.

Where did this list originate? Quickest in what road race, 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, pikes peak?

I would put the 71 duster first . On my fantisy list then

It all depends on the flavor.

1968 'Barracuda 340-S' Notchback ... #3074 lbs. Shipping Weight
* Carter AVS #4933 = {630 CFM's}
* Camshaft = .445"/.455" ~ 276*/284* ~ 52* Overlap

vs.

1971 'Duster 340' .......................... #3154 lbs. Shipping Weight
* Carter Thermoquad #4972 = {750 CFM's}
* Camshaft = .430"/.444" ~ 268*/276* ~ 44* Overlap
* Compression Ratio = 10.2

"71 Demons and Dusters that run NHRA stock classes. 10:60's"? i remember seeing a mag artical about that car years ago. the guys running it would talk about anything on the car BUT the cam that DID meat NHRA specs. they said the trouble with most cams for small block mopar is that it is a copy of a chevy cam. NHRA stock car has nothing to do with any other stock. dont for get the BO29 cuda is not street legal. but it IS NHRA stock.

It's the intake that holds the early cars back, not so much the carb.

The 71 intake has a big open plenum and the runners are at least 1/4 inch larger. If you look at NHRA's engine factors the 71 has always been about 15 hp higher.

Everyday my money is on the 71 340 over a early one

1971 ~ 340/275 hp ........... 314 hp

Ha ha nice comeback, but that's what carter rated it at. Scatpack is correct!
71 was the zenith of the 340 4 bbl engines. Second only to the 340 6 pack/bbl engines

71 thermoquad is 800cfm and a much better intake .

Much better Intake,

Be more specific, instead of using a generalization.

I would say about 15 hp better between the intake and thermoquad using your NHRA hp factor numbers above. And the 68 has a very slightly warmer cam and on paper .2 higher compression ratio. But at any rate I like how my 71 demon runs with the mechanical 6 pack !!

To be honest I always thought NHRA factored the 71 at 310hp. But your the match race NHRA guy, I don't want you to jump down my throat on that since I was still in diapers in 71 LOL..

Mr Cuda,

If you were to take a head (X or J) that flowed say 240 cfm at .450 lift and you put the avs intake on the head while still on the bench you would see that you may only get a fraction of that 240cfm say maybe 208. The same test with the TQ will simply give you more, say 219.

One is simply better than the other. There is not much to debate
