With Flag Day tomorrow, I was pleased to see this today...

MSN

My uncle was on board the U.S.S. West Virginia at the time of the attack but survived after swimming under burning oil on the water surface.
Although he and my aunt had a beautiful swimming pool in their backyard he could never go in water above his knees without having flashbacks to the attack.
RIP Uncle Al.

There will never be another generation like that one, IMO. I thank your Uncle for his service. Daddy was aboard the USS Hilbert Destroyer Escort DE742 from its commission to its decommission. He had a few colorful stories, but other than those, he really didn't like talking about it.

The WeeVee was hit by (I think)six torpedoes, and was counterflooded so it sank upright, unlike Oklahoma. (Even Oklahoma was refloated. The only ones still on the bottom at Pearl are Utah and Arizona)
It was refloated, rebuilt so extensively it was almost unrecognizable.
And used its radar for fire control in the last battleship vs battleship gun duel in history.

But sure how I missed this. I'm named after my mom's uncle who survived Pearl Harbor. He never would say a word about it.

I pulled his record and they didn't say anything about Pearl Harbor, but they had the restoration of his status from dishonorable to honorable, with no explanation why.

Thank you for posting this.

I am sure I have posted this before but James C Webb was KIA onboard the USS Oklahoma. In fact, he was an Oklahoma native and from my area.
A few years ago the government released his remains to the family after DNA analysis. They were given the opportunity to have him buried in any military cemetery but they chose the little community cemetery my dad is the caretaker for. It is our family cemetery and being older all the plots have been spoken for. The family contacted my dad and was told no plots were available for sale. My dad donated one of our family’s unused plots for this sailor.

Fair Winds and Following Seas, James C. Webb.
