On this '77 400 I am putting together. I got a water pump housing with the passenger side inlet, since that's what my radiator has. Now, when I have the pump housing mounted to the engine, I notice I will barely be able to see the timing pointer because the inlet for the radiator hose is right on top of it. Is there a different pointer that will work? All it needs is maybe 1/2" more length coming towards the front and it would easily be seen. I may just mark it, cut it off and elongate it coming to the front a little if nothing else is available. Thank you drive through.

I had the same thing with my 400 and water pump housing !! I just marked the housing !! It worked fine

You can make and put a pointer anywhere you want. So do so. Then, use a piston stop to determine TDC at the balancer based on your DIY pointer. Last, degree the balancer and off you go. When I was younger this would have been a Sat. afternoon. Now it might take me all day--or two days LOLOL

Yeah I just marked the water pump inlet right in line with the zero on the pointer. I got somethin I can see now. lol

I’ve got the same issue too !!! Haha. I drew the line on the pump housing inlet, but even that is hard to see! I was thinking about seeing if any of the other marks line up @ 180* and fashioning a pointer on the drivers side, which has far more room.

Mark your damper with 90 drgree marks and time it ion the opposite side. Get a adjustable timing pointer and use a piton stop to find Top dead center. Turn the motor one direction until it stops and mamarke the damper. Turn it the opposite way until it stops and mark the Damper . The center of those 2 marks is TDC. This is the adjustable pointer we used. Design you own off of what ever works for you.
