I've done my research, here and on-line, and it appears to be a vicious circle:
I am trying to locate the original owner of my car, so I can send $10 to the state where I believe it was first titled and request a title search, but they will not disclose any previous owner(s) name or address without the individual's written consent...so I need to find the original owner and get his written authorization, send it to the DMV, so they will disclose his name and address...but if I knew the previous owner(s) I wouldn't need to request the title search in the first place!

At the most I can get a report that includes when the title transferred and each time it was registered, which wouldn't help at all.

Anyone ever solve this?

currently in the same boat lol.....however there is ways around this depending on what state you are in.....you can go to the dmv and request an application for title wich is a vehicle ownership application.....you have to have a reciept of purchase and the vin numbers wrote down and the car has to of been purchased for under $2500.00,if purchased for over $2500.00 you are required to have an officer inspect the cars lighting/horn/tirews/glass and so on and so forth......anyhow,the dmv will then cross check the history and see if it has been reported stolen (you can check this aswell at your local police station) if all goes well, after so many days they will contact you and tell you if the vehicle is clear to be transfered to your name and they will issue you a title in your name......you are not aloud to request the name and or address of the last registered owner but your local dmv (for a charge$$$) can send out a request to the last registered owner and let them know that your are interested in obtaining the title,if they agree, then you get the title....however....doing it this way,the last registered owner has the chance to say no its my car and I want it.....they find out the title is lost and the can then report it as stolen and they end up with the car back and your out the money you bought the car for and the money you spent at the dmv to have them contact the last registered owner................next option, there are multiple online title services such as mainly titles located in maine....in some state no title is required to register a vehicle in your name, just a bill of sale....anyhow,these title services are located in such states and they right up a title for you for the fee you get charged and they send the paperwork back to you, then you go to your local dmv and register it and then you recieve a title...............one more way to go about it is to go and register for a DBA (doing buisness as) certification...should only cost about $10.00. then write up reciept for any time and money you have invested in the car and then tack on charges for your labor and make up reciepts even if you want of whatever....you can then go and apply for a title as a buisness because it shows that money is owed and after 30 days i believe....you have the right to obtain a title to sell the vehicle to recoupe the money and time that is invested in the car.....they don't need to know you are doing it so you can keep the car for yourself lol.......anyhow,thats what I know and I figured i would share with you......none of its fun,its all paper work, some of its money.....and you will probably have a headache at the end of the day any route you take lol.... I hope that helps you out and that maybe I had mentioned something that will help with what your problem is.....good luck!!! and keep us posted on what you find out and get worked out in the end please!
