Torque converter Weighted Ballance?

So I am finally able to inspect my torque converter to determine if it is weighted for an externally balanced set up or neutral balanced.

Right off the bat I see a weight welded to the side. I initially didn’t see anything on the front face via the inspection sheild.

Is this weight for neutral balancing the torque converter itself or does this look like a weight for balancing an externally balanced motor?

That is not the weight for external balance. Usually mounted around the drain plug between the flex plate and converter face.

The weight(s) on the side as shown in the pictured torque converter are for balance of the converter assembly itself. Balance weights for an externally balanced engine are placed on the face of the converter.

The following two images show original style weights for external engine balance on a converter without and with a drain plug:

Original balance weights have a special type of deep spot weld. Weights that have been added typically have welding beads along the edge of the weights.

OK, I got another question for you guys. If I brought my torque converter to a place that does torque converters can they put it on a machine and measure flashpoint? If so, how much would they charge to do that? Is there a way to calculate it any other way?

Depends on the shop. The shop would have to be in the performance converter business, not just doing your typical stock converters. If its a performance converter and you know who built it contact them and see what they can tell you. Modifications are done to internal parts to increase stall, so without a dyno or cutting it apart, it would be hard to guess what the stall of the converter would be.

Ok so there is some type of torque converter dyno that generates a curve or at least a breakpoint vs rpm?
